Why I Say YES to Volunteering at School

True story: I say yes to pretty much anything my child’s school asks me to do. Before you roll your eyes, hear me out. I actually really enjoy volunteering at school. Also, I have the time. Some of my closest friends are other moms that I got to know from working on events at school. You could say that I get almost as much as I give through my volunteer work.

Here are my main reasons for saying YES:

  1. Being around campus a lot allows me to get to know the teachers and staff. In the carline era, I like having opportunities to interact with my child’s teachers face to face and have conversations with them. It is nice to be able to get to know the enrichment teachers and the teachers from other grades that my child will eventually have. These people are such an asset to my child, so any parent involvement that they ask for I gladly oblige.
  2. I enjoy getting to know my son’s classmates and the students in other grade levels. Shocker, I can be somewhat of a helicopter mom. I like knowing who my kids are hanging out with. Not everybody goes to class birthday parties, so volunteering allows me to get to know the kids who are less socially active outside of school. Multiple grade levels have recess at the same time. My son comes home talking about different kids he is playing with. It is nice to put faces to the names. Also, it’s reassuring that my son is in a good environment when I get to see how sweet all the other kids are.
  3. It is important for me to show my kids that we take their education seriously. We chose a school that they will attend from PreK through 12th grade. School is their job. We want them to take it seriously, get involved and enjoy everything it has to offer. We picked a school with a strong community so we need to participate in the community. My son LOVES seeing me at school. He is still young, so I am enjoying him wanting me around while it lasts.
  4. Somebody has to help. It might as well be me. Even though schools have excellent faculty and support staff, there is always a need for extra hands. Things just work better if everyone pitches in. Hence, school community. Not everyone can volunteer. In a lot of families, both parents have demanding careers. Some families have babies at home and just can’t juggle childcare to volunteer. I feel like those of us that can, should. If I were on the other end, I would appreciate another mom helping my child decorate Easter cookies or shop at the Christmas boutique. I am thankful that I can be there, enjoy my child, and share the scoop with the parents who cant make it. Also, the teachers do not take care of themselves. It is up to parents to coordinate teacher appreciation week, holiday gifts, etc. Our teachers are so important, it is nice to be involved in showing them gratitude throughout the year.

Not everybody can volunteer at school, and some who can don’t enjoy it. To each his own. I am grateful for the opportunity and I have a blast doing it.
