Thinking about Kindergarten in New Orleans?

It can be scarier than Halloween – that moment you look down at your precious preschooler / toddler / infant / pregnant belly and realize you have to choose a place for her to learn and grow and thrive. It’s a big decision, but there may be more options than you think. The first step is to gather information …

We hear a lot of questions and concerns from the parents at The Parenting Center about starting school.

Is it too early to apply? Too late?!

What’s the difference between public and charter schools? Religious and independent?

The Parenting Center School Fair

So we started the annual School Fair, inviting schools with Kindergarten programs in the New Orleans area to participate in an Open House where parents can learn about their curriculum, admission process, and any services and extra-curricular options offered.

This year, The Parenting Center School Fair is joining the Kindergarten Readiness Forum and moving to the New Orleans JCC. Parents are invited to hear a panel of experts that will take some of the mystery out of the process of choosing and applying for Kindergarten. A teacher will talk about what children should be learning in the early years to be prepared to succeed in Kindergarten; a psychologist will address questions and concerns about assessment; and representatives from ISAS (Independent Schools) and EnrollNOLA (OneApp) will talk about the application process.

What about homeschooling? Is that a crazy idea?

How can I get help for a child with special needs?

Which schools are on the OneApp? Is there a way to have a better shot at getting in to my top choice of the charter schools?

Which schools have PreK classes? Toddler programs?

Want to know more? After the panel, walk through the Open House to talk to representatives from more than 20 area schools and support service organizations.

The 2017 School Fair and Readiness Forum is this Tuesday, October 24th, from 6 – 8:00 pm, with the panel from 6 – 6:30 and the open house to follow, at 5342 St Charles Ave, New Orleans. See HERE for the current list of participating schools and organizations.
