Thank You to the Teachers Who Make Homework Optional

As a mom, there are few things more rewarding than seeing my children thrive both academically and emotionally. But let’s be honest: after a long day at school, our kids come home tired, exhausted, and in need of rest. They’ve spent hours learning, participating, and engaging with their peers. By the time they get home, there’s not much energy left in the tank. That’s why I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who make homework optional.

In an ideal world, our children would learn everything they need to know during school hours. And for some kids, that’s exactly what happens. They absorb information, practice new skills, and walk away with a solid understanding of the day’s lessons. But for others, a bit of extra practice at home can be beneficial. However, there’s a fine balance to strike, especially when time is limited.

Our kids are waking up as early as 6 AM to get ready for school, and with after-school activities, sports, or simply the need to unwind, there’s not much time left before bedtime rolls around. In our household, bedtime is around 8 or 8:30 PM to ensure they get a good night’s rest. That leaves only a couple of precious hours in the evening to spend quality time together as a family.

This is why the decision to make homework optional has been a game-changer for us. The teachers send home a small amount of homework — just enough to reinforce what’s been learned without overwhelming us. We receive a simple math worksheet and a language assignment, such as retelling a story they read that day. We may also need to study for a test. It’s all very reasonable, and what’s even better is that it’s optional.

On days when we’re just too busy, whether due to extracurricular activities, sports, or simply because it’s been a tough day, we have the freedom to skip the homework or complete it on another day. This flexibility has been phenomenal for our family. It’s allowed us to focus on what truly matters: spending time together, resting, and recharging for the next day.

We’re almost halfway into the school year, and I can already say this has been one of the best changes we’ve experienced. When the teachers announced this policy during orientation, I felt an enormous sense of relief. The weight of nightly homework battles was lifted off my shoulders, and I’m beyond grateful.

So, to the teachers who made this decision, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You’ve given us the gift of time, peace, and flexibility. It’s something I’ll cherish all year long.
