My Newfound Appreciation for Moms of School Aged Children

Typical school in our home probably isn’t the same as typical school in your home. That’s mainly because we homeschool our kiddos. Since I homeschool, I don’t do the hustle and bustle of uniforms, lunches, car line, and parent teacher conferences. Of course, there are also the class parties and field trips too. Our uniform includes pajamas all day every day, and we love it that way! Not leaving the house definitely has its pros and cons, but a few weeks ago, I gained a whole new appreciation for parents who do the juggling act on a daily basis.

A few weeks ago at Vacation Bible School, I really got a glimpse of how exhausting it is.

The kids had to be there for 9:00 am so we were definitely more spoiled than a typical day of school. VBS ended at noon so I didn’t have to pack them a lunch which was also a plus. Leaving the house with two kids ready to roll wasn’t so bad. We live about 30 minutes away from the church so instead of wasting my time and gas, I opted to stay ‘upfront’ as us Lafitte people say. One day my sweet mother in love brought them for me so I could get some work done before picking them up. The next day my husband had errands to run so he brought and picked them up. Then on the last day, Ryan and I both brought them,  grocery shopped, and then picked up the kids.

Since we had to get up and moving pretty early, I had to be pretty strict about bedtime. My oldest, Lexi, was okay with this deal and set her own alarm for us. Our son Abram, on the other hand, wasn’t quite as understanding but got over it pretty quickly. One thing that I thought was adorable is that one of my pet peeves is being late. I hate it with a passion. It stresses me out to be late so much so that I arrive fifteen minutes early just about everywhere I go. Well, my darling daughter has picked up this wonderful (and annoying to others) trait, and I couldn’t be more proud. She must have asked me no less than ten times a day if we were going to be late. A child after my own heart.

It most definitely wasn’t all bad.

The sense of freedom of dropping the big kids off in capable and loving hands was so awesome! I was able to grab lunch solo one day and just relax for a few minutes. The best part was that the kids viewed it as a vacation too so they begged me to go back daily. By the end of the three days, I was exhausted. I couldn’t figure out why but I think it was just being on the go so much.

So kudos to you moms who do all the things for multiple kids of different ages. You are a Rockstar!

Danielle is married to Ryan and together they have four beautiful babies. They're raising Lexi, Abram, Sutton and Beckham on the bayou in Crown Point. She is a self-proclaimed hot mess, Jesus-loving, homeschooling, Netflix binging, crafting and party planning stay at home mom. Sutton was born with achondroplasia dwarfism so advocating and raising awareness is important to her. Most nights once the kids are asleep you will find her staying up way too late to enjoy the quiet that happens after four kids.
