How You Can Support JC Ellis After the School Fire

Last Tuesday, while most metro area schools were canceled in anticipation of Hurricane Sally, a fire started in an annex building of JC Ellis Elementary School in Metairie. No one was in the building and Jefferson Parish Fire Department firefighters and first responders were able to get the fire under control relatively quickly. However, the building was heavily damaged by fire, smoke, and water from the firefighting efforts. Twelve faculty and staff members lost the contents of their classrooms. Insurance will likely cover replacement of things like computers, overhead projectors, and other big ticket items. But as many people know, public school teachers often purchase classroom supplies and decorations with their own funds. They put their hearts, their creativity, and free time into making their classrooms a safe and fun learning environment for the students.

Many of our readers have reached out to ask how they can help. The fact that so many of you reached out that we put together a post speaks volumes to the generosity of the New Orleans Mom Community. We know that things are tight for many people during these times, and yet the overwhelming offers of love are still there. Mr. Rogers said to look for the helpers in times of uncertainty. You, dear readers, continue to be helpers.

The teachers have put together wish lists for anyone who wishes to contribute. Click on the teacher’s last name to be directed to their wish list.

The New Orleans Mom team continues to be overwhelmed by the love and unity of the families we have the honor to serve each and every day. Ellis means a lot to a few of our team members and the community it serves, both as a K-8 community school and magnet immersion school. From all of us and from the Ellis Family, thank you.

Lindsay is a native New Orleanian, displaced only by her years at Mississippi State, where she earned a B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries and a minor in English. She came home shortly after Katrina, to work as a zookeeper and be a part of the rebuilding of her beloved city. She dragged her husband Drake, a Tennessee native, along with her. Their son Bennett joined the family in 2010, and in 2014 they welcomed identical twin girls, Genevieve and Kellen Clair. She now works full-time as an Environmental Scientist while working on her Master's and serving part-time as NOM’s resident Jill of All Trades. Powered by espresso, cake, and craft beer, her happy place is on a beach or in the woods. Need to identify a plant, tree, or animal? Lindsay’s a wealth of random knowledge. She loves to cook and sprinkle a little glitter on everything.
