Choosing a school for your child in the Greater New Orleans Area is so overwhelming. We have a ton of different options: private, Catholic, charter, magnet, etc. Each option has its own list of pros and cons. When my husband and I had to make the decision for our kids, we chose a single sex school. We fielded a ton of questions from family, friends, and strangers as to why we went this route. Especially since we have a coed school literally around the corner from our house.
Here are 5 reasons that single sex education is my jam.
Gender Specific Curriculum
Honestly, this was the top reason I wanted to tour our school. My niece was doing well in her all girls school, and I wanted to see what the boy schools were all about. The first thing the admissions director said to us is “we just get boys.” What he meant is that they understand how boys’ brains work and the best methods to teach them. The curriculum is catered to their behavior and tendencies.
Developing the Whole Child
Our school goes from Pre K to 12th grade. I am literally sending them little boys, and when they finish, they will be men. The faculty instills in the students values and manners, not just school work. They have a credo that they learn from day one about what kind of men they should be.
We Lived It and Loved It
My husband and I both went to coed elementary schools and then single sex high schools. It is something that we really wanted our kids to experience. I have zero regrets about going to an all girls high school. Those 4 years are full of very fond memories.
Class Unification
Single sex schools tend to have smaller classes sizes than coed schools. It was important to me that my kids have low class sizes. Since they are all the same gender and there are few of them, the bond between the classmates is very strong. The entire class plays together and are friends. They know everybody by first and last name. It is a brotherhood for them. We are lucky because the parents from my son’s class have a strong camaraderie as well.
Fewer Distractions
There is no drama between the sexes. Competition over crushes is not taking place in the classroom. The kids can assert themselves more without feeling embarrassed in front of the opposite sex. The students can be more relaxed and not have to worry about impressing anybody.
Picking a school is really personal choice for each family. What is a great fit for one child may not work for another child. Our single sex school has been wonderful for our child and also for our whole family. We are all very happy with our experience. I look forward to continuing our adventure year after year with my boys, their classmates, and their families.

You do realize that everyone isn’t heterosexual, right?
