One-on-One Time

If you know me or have read any of my posts, you will understand that we have a very full schedule and an even fuller home. We love our big family and all the activities (most of the time) and have genuinely embraced all that comes with having a large family. A benefit of having four children and so much going on is that there is always something to do, somewhere to be, something to entertain our troop. The downfall is that usually we are on the go-go-go.

Slowing it Down

Lately, I have been trying to focus a bit more on spending small spurts of one-on-one time with each of my kids: my two daughters and my step-son. I have found as they get older and have more thoughts and ideas of their own, it can be really nice just to have a conversation or run a quick errand away from everyone else. Kids have so much to say, and they can be more reserved about opening up in a bigger group. Whether it’s an art project, a trip to the grocery store, grabbing a treat on the way home, or spending time reading a book, I am trying to pencil in time to have a bit more one-on-one time with each of our kids.

Activity Ideas

Here are a few simple things I have tried lately with the kids. They are responding really well and enjoying the time. Plus, I hear all kinds of funny and interesting things that they’re thinking about when they can get a bit more air time!

  1. Going on a walk
  2. Riding bikes on the lakefront
  3. Picking up a smoothie or ice cream
  4. Running an errand or picking out something for the house
  5. Decorating for a holiday
  6. Baking a cake or a new recipe
  7. Doing a craft project
  8. Completing a personality profile and talking about the results
  9. Watching a show or movie of their choosing
  10. Asking for their help organizing an area of the home
  11. Getting a fancy breakfast together like beignets!

My goal is to create the space for a few times per month when I can be with each child one-on-one. What are some of your favorite one-on-one activities you like to do with your children?
