Unpopular Opinion :: I {Still} Like Parody Videos

A couple years ago, parody videos were all the rage in the mom world. Who could forget “I’m so Pregnant” by What’s Up Moms. However, like most things, familiarity breeds contempt. After a few dozen more parody videos surfaced, my Facebook feed and other blogs had enough, and began showing their disdain. “ANOTHER mom-parody video?? I’m so over them,” they’d say. And that’s fine. Maybe they’re overdone or played out by now, but I am here to tell you I shamelessly love them. And I’m not sorry. I blare them from the car. My kids know the lyrics to many of them, as does my husband, much to his chagrin. I actually prefer most of the parodies to the original songs.

Why, you ask?

Simply put, because I can relate to them.

My kids might not know what “Closer” by the Chainsmokers is all about, but they love it. And I like it too, but again, its completely non-relatable to me. I have no “Four years no call, now you’re looking pretty in a hotel bar” story, and I AM getting older, which is why I much prefer the MyLifeSuckers rendition, “We are All Getting Older.”

While the younger generation may be much cooler than me, they are not relatable. Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” is a catchy tune, but NONE of that is going on in my life. I’m much more a Starbucks, Target and playdate mom, so I would rather listen to another What’s Up Mom’s parody because those videos are a much more accurate representation of my stage in life.

And as a girl with some … bass, I do enjoy Megan Trainor’s All About That Bass. However, The Texting Yoga Pants made my day with their “I Wanna Go to Chick Fil A” especially the “Yes that’s my kid running barefoot to the bathroom stall” line because at this point in my life, I can relate to that much more than “I got that boom boom that all the boys chase; all the right junk in all the right places.”

I love me some Adele. That voice … my goodness. And no one comes close to her vocal talents, but again, I’m not heartbroken or longing for lovers of the past. I’m content, boring and happy. So when I first heard “Hello From the MotherSide” by Emily Mills I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. “I love my children but I don’t want anymore … can somebody pass me the pinot noir.” This.is.my.life!

So until contemporary pop singers can make songs I can actually relate to, I will continue to be a fangirl of the mom-parody. Hell, if I were talented enough, I would make my own parody videos! Alas, I am not. But I have included a few of my favorite videos below for your enjoyment:

Do you still enjoy parody videos? If so, which ones are your favorites?
