Enjoy a “Five Senses” Fall at the French Market {Show Us Your Cutest Pumpkins Photo Contest}

The French Market holds deep food memories for New Orleans locals. Not a week passes that someone does not remark to one of The French Market’s staff or vendors: “I remember going with my Grandma/Dad/Aunt to the French Market to get…” (fill in the blank with: seafood, spices, watermelon, roasted corn, sugarcane, tomatoes, meat, garlic, etc).

BooCarreLuckily, there are certain times of the year when you can still feel this kinship to the past by finding local seasonal produce at the Market. This fall you will find sugarcane, squash and satsumas in addition to that favorite autumn “produce:” the pumpkin. But keep in mind … Louisiana doesn’t grow many pumpkins, so even though locals love to pick their pumpkin out at the French Market, you might be purchasing a pumpkin from New Mexico. Our climate simply isn’t made to produce large, bright-orange, sturdy-skinned pumpkins. {Photo Credit: Kim Welsh}

Satsumas: The Other Orange Produce

What we can produce is some outstanding citrus, including the sassy “other orange produce” – the satsuma – named for its place of origin: Satsuma, Japan.

The French Market is thrilled to be bringing a new food celebration to the table on October 20, 2013 to honor this under-celebrated but beloved local produce item (a cousin of the mandarin). Satsumas are especially kid-friendly as they are smaller and easier to peel than oranges … and often seedless! If your little one is too little to peel and/or chew, you can juice the satsumas for a delicious, milder-and-less-bitter-than-orange juice drink. Some moms have even been known to add a dash of sugar to the mix to sweeten up the sometimes sour-tinged Satsuma juice, which can be sometimes be the case if squeezed earlier in the season.*

Indulge Your Family’s Senses at The Boo Carré Halloween and Harvest Festival This Weekend

The Fifth Annual Boo Carré (a play on the term “Vieux Carre”) Halloween and Harvest Festival is a one day trick-or-treating event on Saturday, October 19 geared to kids and families that spans the entire French Market District, with most activities in Dutch Alley and at the Farmers Market. Enjoy a daytime celebration complete with a petting zoo, craft booths, pie-eating contests, and plenty of pumpkin-themed arts and crafts for kids to make and take.

A “spooky secondline” begins and ends the day with live music (an acoustic trio in the morning and a brass band in the afternoon) Boo Carre logoaccompanied by costumed characters, including a group of stiltwalkers from the International School of Louisiana’s circus arts program. Shops, restaurants, and Farmers Market vendors will hand out candy and other items to kids in costume who pick up a special reusable Boo Carré trick or treat bag. Miniature golf and a photo booth add to the carnival atmosphere for this fun-filled autumn day that includes the “best weather of the year” as part of its appeal. As with all French Market events, Boo Carré is free and open to the public, with ample convenient parking along the River and at Elysian Fields at 3 French Market operated lots.

Strolling the historic French Market District and the riverfront in costume is one of the best ways to kick off your Halloween. Use it as a test for a new costume and as a way to give your kids some trick or treat “practice!” Plus, you’ll enjoy the many interactive booths and activities that will allow you to sit and enjoy the mild New Orleans fall weather in one of the city’s most charming and family-friendly spots.

*Consider placing satsumas in your child’s Christmas stocking to start a new tradition, based on the tradition of putting oranges in stockings. They will still be in season and at their sweetest!

Now … Show Us YOUR Cutest Pumpkins Experiencing the Senses of the Season!

In the spirit of experiencing the sights, sounds and wonderful smells available at The French Market this season, we are excited to launch our 1st Annual Cutest Pumpkin Contest. This will run very similarly to our Cutest Saints Fan Contest, so this should sound pretty familiar to y’all! We would love to see pictures of your families out and about enjoying the fall season in and around New NOMBcutestpumpkinOrleans, perhaps at Boo Carre itself, one of the many area pumpkin patches or Boo at the Zoo! The pictures don’t necessarily need to include pumpkins; anything fall-oriented is fair game! Think costumes or hay rides or pumpkin painting parties – mainly, we want to see your families enjoying and using their five senses this season!

The winner will receive a gift basket full of New Orleans goodies valued at $50 plus a $15 gift certificate good at A Tisket A Tasket Books and Gifts at 910 Decatur Street in the heart of the French Market District. Winner must pick up their basket by November 15 at the shop.
