Mom Confession :: I Have A Favorite Child

On any given day if you were to ask me “Who is your favorite child?,” I would have a straight answer for you. However, it would be different depending on the day. I have two children who are completely polar opposites. While I love them the same, I usually like one more than other. There are several factors that determine who my favorite of the day is.

My kids are a good mix of my husband and me. They both share qualities with me that makes us click. One of my sons is a party animal like myself. We can have a lot of fun together going on adventures. He is always up for anything and likes being on the go. One of my sons likes to sit and concentrate on things such as puzzles and Legos, both of which I enjoy doing. I enjoy having in-depth conversations with the child who is a big talker. It’s really special when my quiet child opens up and wants to tell me about his friends or video games. They each have their own way of making me light up.

Some of my favorite things about my kids are also the same things that can drive me insane. There are no “off days” for my adventure child. He is high strung and super impatient. He tests my patience. My quiet, focused child is also the whiner. He makes a big deal about having to leave the house sometimes (for both fun and errands). On many days one of them is just more difficult to deal with.

While they both occupy equal space in my heart, I usually like one more than the other. It goes back and forth pretty equally. Honestly, sometimes who my favorite is changes midday. Some days somebody is just sweeter to me. Other days that same kid is just so difficult to parent. They never know who is the favorite. It is not a thing I announce at the dinner table. On occasionally magical days (yes they do happen), I like them both equally, and my heart almost bursts.
