Thank You Target for Helping to Celebrate Black History Month

Ok Target! Thanks for honoring Black History Month.

February is full of events. It’s the month of love, Mardi Gras season is now a geaux and the celebration of Black History Month. For me, I celebrate it all the time but during this month, I like to honor all of the rich histories that come from our culture.

One day, as I was walking into Target, I saw a really cute display that caught my eye.

The mannequins were dressed in outfits with sayings such as “I am Black History” and “Embrace Your Roots.”

My immediate reactions was … Ok Target, I see you!

First, during Christmas, Target had the Black Santa wrapping paper and now this. YES PLEASE!

Shirts and Makeup and Books, O My!

As I looked around the section, I saw books with young black girls and boys with big afros, a book written about Serena Williams, books written by different black authors, and journals with the continent of Africa on the front. I saw cards with black faces that show black love and celebration. I even saw a display with different hair care and makeup products that were launched by black entrepreneurs.

THIS IS AMAZING!

This is more than a display to me.

As a black mother to a young girl, I want her to know her history. When I was growing up, I didn’t see girls who looked like me with natural hair, dark-skinned, etc, in a successful role. But as the years passed, we now see it more and I’m so grateful for that. Because Target is one of the biggest chain stores that have this display, my daughter can see that she is beautiful, that she can be successful without changing her looks and be unapologetically Black. This can teach all children about what some people went through to have a say in this country and all of the things that we, to this day, wouldn’t be able to live without because of what our ancestors created for everyone.

I really want to showcase the great efforts that Target is doing to show diversity, love, history, and culture. I can truly appreciate all of this and hope that everyone else can see the beauty and love that comes from it all.

And with that being said, thank you to the person who works in the corporate office for Target.
