Yes, The New Louisiana Children’s Museum Is Worth They Hype

I, like many of you, grew up going to Louisiana Children’s Museum on Julia Street. I can recall the magic of family outings and school field trips spent inside those big blue doors. I can vividly recall desperately trying to get myself inside a bubble that went over my head, trying to organize an elementary aged kitchen staff like I was on Restaurant Impossible, and always making sure I placed my Winn-Dixie groceries in the exact spot I had retrieved them from. Then many years later I got to experience the magic all over again as a parent. I was chaperoning a field trip it felt like I had just attended.

I was lucky enough to recently get a behind the scenes look at the brand new Louisiana Children’s Museum facility and to say I was blown away is an understatement. Before I even walked through the new and modern big blue doors, I was in awe. Every time I visit City Park, I look around and wonder if this is what all of New Orleans used to look like. Its beauty is unsurpassed and Louisiana Children’s Museum did an excellent job of not only preserving that beauty but featuring it.

In true South Louisiana fashion, there is a porch that you just want to sit on all day. It feels like you’re in the middle of an oasis. There is an incredible fog installation that goes off once every hour and I can just imagine children twirling and dancing on the gorgeous bridge in the thick fog imaging they are a genie escaping from a magic lamp.

Every single last detail is incredibly thoughtful. The fun artwork displayed throughout the museum was all drawn by children. All windows boast a gorgeous view of the surrounding City Park. Even the placement of windows were considered to maximize daylight and minimize heat. There is a refreshing focus on sustainability and each detail was created with that thought in mind.

There are even exhibits straight from children’s brains. One is a huge floor size checkers board that is a map of New Orleans. When a game piece is placed on a square sounds from that neighborhood can he heard. We heard crowds chanting “WHO DAT” in the Dome in one square and sounds of the river in another.

Even the littlest visitors have a spot dedicated just for them, an entire area dedicated to 4 and under. There is an incredible sensory lagoon to roll around in, lots of textures to explore, safe places to climb, even the cutest tiny chairs I’ve ever seen.

Possibly my favorite spot was the 100’ water table. I know my children could easily spend hours in that one spot.

Have no fear, old favorites like the bubble maker and kitchen are still there. They’re just even better and more thoughtfully crafted than before. Soon to be new favorites, like an entire music room, have been added also.

I am incredibly excited for the children of NOLA and future visitors from all over who come to the new Louisiana Children’s Museum. It is very much worth the hype and we’re so lucky it’s in our backyard. Who’s ready to plan their first visit??

The new location will be opening August 31st at noon.
