We Are Mothers, Not Nuns

Recently, I had conversations with two of my closest friend about them being worried about their perception on social media. Not because of anything controversial, but just pictures of them being themselves or having a good time. Of course, I gave them a pep talk about how fabulous they are, but it got me thinking. Why do we as mothers feel that we need to act like martyrs to be perceived as good mothers?? We are mothers, not nuns.

Mothers can look nice in a swimsuit. I spend 90% of my summer in a bathing suit swimming with my kids. One pieces are my favorite and I try to find cute ones that are still practical. My friends wear bikinis, high waist bottoms, strapless, etc. We are all having fun with our kids. We should not feel self conscious posting beautiful family pictures of us at the beach because we have a little cleavage or our bathing suit has a cut out.

Mothers and fathers can have fun nights out together. As parents, we deserve a break. It is nice to get dolled up for a date. We need to unwind and reconnect with each other. Going out and enjoying a night with friends can be the best medicine. We were a couple before we were parents. Every once in awhile you need to break up all the trips to the zoo and ballpark and have adult fun.

Mothers can go on girls trips. Trips out of town or staycations in the city. Maybe a night at a hotel alone. Whatever your version of a “girls trip” is, just do it. Take the selfies lounging poolside with a cocktail. Time away with friends, sisters in law, or even your mom is good for the soul.

As a reminder to myself, my closest friends, and all the fantastic mothers reading this: your kids are happy and well cared for, take care of yourself and have a little fun! You are not a nun or a martyr; you are a wife and mother doing your best and enjoying life.
