What Homeschooling Looks Like To Us

Homeschooling is not something I ever imagined myself doing, yet here we are. I am still enjoying it most days, and my daughter seems to be thriving. Now, I don’t want to falsely lead you here. Yes, we homeschool, but I don’t teach her. So I guess you could consider it halfway homeschool.

There are so many curriculum options out there and it is a really personal decision. It was really hard to choose which one we were going to go with, but at the same time, my mom heart knew all along. I wanted a curriculum that was all laid out for me and told me exactly what to do every single day. Insert Abeka Academy. We also use the videos so she gets a virtual teaching experience, and I don’t have to question if she’s actually learning (I’m a paranoid mom, let’s be honest.)

I wish I could tell you that we wake up every single morning at 7 am and do school then move on with our day. But I can’t lie to y’all. As a mom times three, a work at home mom, a side gig mom, and everything else in my life, we do school as we can. We have a typical schedule that we follow but life doesn’t always allow that. And that’s okay! I don’t stress it.

I was once asked why we don’t make school a priority, but that’s just not true.

I get it though. When you’re used to traditional school, it’s hard to break that 8-3 mentality. We do 170 days of school, but it may look differently than you. We can have the flexibility our schedule needs. Some days, we do school before bed. Some days, we do a day and a half. Some days, we have a field trip, and some days, we’re running around like crazy and skip.

We don’t have those adorable holiday parties y’all have or go on those fun field trips with the whole class that y’all do. Some days I want to quit homeschooling and put the kids in a traditional school. We power through those tough days though, because at this moment in time, homeschool is best for our family.

Lexi’s curriculum has eight subjects a day.

Her subjects include bible, seat work explanation, reading, spelling and poetry, writing, arithmetics, reading, combination practice, and activity time. Bible is her longest lesson at 40 minutes, and all of the others are average 20 minutes. An average school day will take us 3.5 to 4 hours to get through.

We do accredited homeschool, because one day we want the kids to go to traditional school, and we want to make sure we have that accreditation behind us. We collect her tests and send them in for progress reports and grades.

Honestly, homeschooling has been a blessing that I never expected. It can be a burden sometimes too when you think about the weight of schooling your child that will one day become an adult. I don’t have more patience than you – I promise. I have the grace that God gives me every single day to not lose my ever loving mind.

And some days? Traditional school sounds really, really good.

She is a self-proclaimed hot mess, Jesus-loving, homeschooling, Netflix binging, crafting and party planning stay at home mom. Sutton was born with achondroplasia dwarfism so advocating and raising awareness is important to her. Most nights once the kids are asleep you will find her staying up way too late to enjoy the quiet that happens after four kids.
