Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery: Advanced Cosmetic Procedure Comes to Touro

About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. Based on tumor size, women may have to choose between a mastectomy or lumpectomy. These surgeries normally leave a visible reminder of breast cancer. Many women are unaware of all the surgical options available, including minimally invasive approaches to breast cancer surgery. Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery is an advanced treatment option for removing breast cancer with no visible scar. John Colfry, MD, a breast surgical oncologist with Touro’s Crescent City Physicians is one of the first surgeons in the New Orleans area to be a certified Hidden Scar™ surgeon.

Studies show that breast surgery scars significantly impact a woman’s psychological and emotional recovery and quality of life after surgery because scars can have a large impact on a woman’s self-confidence, intimacy, and body image. Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery hides incisional scars, minimizing the daily emotional reminder of a breast cancer diagnosis. Whether a patient is having a lumpectomy or a nipple sparing mastectomy, Hidden Scar™ surgery allows for optimal cosmetic results.

Hidden Scar Mastectomy

A mastectomy procedure allows your surgeon to remove breast cancer by removing all of the breast tissue. The surgeon may remove your nipple depending on the location of the tumor, which is called a total mastectomy. This procedure leaves a visible scar in front of the woman’s breast. A nipple sparing mastectomy may be an option for some women; this surgery involves removal of all of the breast tissue with perseveration of the skin and the nipple. With the Hidden Scar™ Nipple Sparing Mastectomy, the surgeon makes an incision in a woman’s natural crease underneath her breast, the inframammary fold. Thus the scar will be hidden after healing.

Hidden Scar Lumpectomy

A lumpectomy procedure removes the tumor with a healthy rim of tissue around the tumor; a woman is able to preserve her natural breast. A traditional lumpectomy involves an incision directly over the tumor to remove it, which leaves a visible scar on the breast. With the Hidden Scar™ Lumpectomy, the incision will be placed either in the natural crease underneath the breast, around the nipple areolar complex, or in a skin crease underneath the armpit. Thus the scar will be hidden after healing.

Should I consider Hidden Scar Surgery?

Patients who undergo this approach have no increased risk of tumor recurrence than patients who undergo any other type of technique. With this more sophisticated approach to breast cancer surgery, a woman can have more self-confidence after having battled breast cancer.

A patient may qualify for Hidden Scar Breast Cancer Surgery based on the size and location of her tumor, breast shape, and breast size. Learn more about Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery HERE.
